Asus ML248H Product Reviews

Asus ML248H Review by Jennifer Madsen (Orem, Utah United States)

I purchased this monitor based on many of the positive reviews I have read. As I am getting this for the family for Christmas, I broke it out of the box to inspect. First off, the upper left hand corner of the frame was broken, with about a 3/4 inch chunk of the vent strip ready to fall off and a visible crack running diagonal where the top and side frame meet. All pixels seem to be working properly. Callibration was way off out of the box. I played around with the settings for hours and finally utilized an icc profile at bestgamingmonitor.net. This helped out greatly. I did have to turn my gamma down on the Nvidia control panel to .73 though....all other settings left to default except for a bump on digital vibrance (I'm a gamer not a photo expert, lol). Supposedly, the monitor "game" mode, which I'm not using, increases the vibrance of the colors as well. I tried to like the preset profiles (theater, gaming, scenery, etc), but just didn't like it at all....at least in gaming. Utilizing the dynamic contrast in my test game, The Witcher 2, resulted in some temporary fading to black during certain in-game lighting conditions. This was resolved by simply moving my mouse to adjust my viewing angle ever so slightly. I could recreate this by simply looking back at the same spot again and again. As a result I just simply keep the dynamic contrast turned off. So now, after hours of work, I have everything tweaked to my liking. So this leads me to my biggest struggle with the monitor currently. I have equal amounts of bleeding on both the left and right side. This leads me to believe it is not due to the broken corner as the bleeding is nearly identical to the right side. It is obvious on dark scenes, but really not so noticeable otherwise. Also, the veiwing angles are very limited. The best vertical viewing angle for greatest screen consistency is with my eyes about 1 inch below the top of the screen. I sit about 2.5 feet from the screen. As I should send the screen back anyway due to the broken corner, I am seriously considering just ordering the Dell u2412m which I had originally shyed away from due to it's 8ms response time. However, gamers are saying it's not an issue unless you are a hardcore FPS gamer that competes with others. I am more about enjoying the scenery as much as the action and, as such, I may enjoy the increased viewing angles, crisp color palette, higher resolution and 16:10 screen space that the u2412m provides. If anybody has an experienced view on this, please pipe in.

Asus ML248H Review by San Jose

the monitor is look great, and the shipment is on time. A plus here. However, there is a problem with monitor. I don't know who or where to contract technical support or customer services because none were provide to me along with the shipment package. Here is the problem. After the monitor is on for 10-15 min, I notice on the right side of the monitor is getting a bit warm. I have another monitor, MS238H; and it is not. Hopefully, the monitor ML248H which i just got for the few weeks will not break down any time soon, and someone from technical will contract me soon

Asus ML248H Review by Kyle Williams (Georgia, USA)

Just got my ML248 today, and the things everyone is saying about it are true. The picture quality is terrific, better than the 22" HDTV I was using up to now, though not by a considerable margin. Not that you should expect a night-and-day difference between HD displays. Still, the fact that I could notice an improvement at all without a side-by-side comparison is a sure plus. There's not much more to say in this area, as it's all been said before.

However, one downside that isn't touched on so much in these reviews is audio. No, there are no speakers, but there is a headphone jack. I figured, "Great, I can still use it with my 360 if I use headphones." Thing is, the audio quality is... slightly atrocious. At first, I thought it might have been my headphones starting to go bad, but checking them with other devices ruled that out. Any big booming sounds produce an irritating crackle, and otherwise, it all sounds tinny and lacks any bass. I wasn't expecting that; call it ignorance if you want, but I always thought that the headphones themselves determined sound quality whenever you used them. Only now do I realize the importance of a device's sound card, and this monitor is most definitely not packing the best. Keep that in mind if you intend to plug a game console into this thing.

However, if you're using it with a PC or some other device which doesn't rely on the monitor for audio, I can find nothing to complain about. I got this monitor in preparation for the computer I'll be building soon, and the laptop I've hooked up to it in the meantime shows it was not a mistake. Given the limited space I have on my desk, I was hoping I'd be able to retire the TV and use this with my 360. Sadly, the horrible sound quality via headphones means I'm going to have to get creative with my setup. That's my reason for knocking off one star.

One other thing I should mention is that the product arrived rather later than the estimate. I was expecting it later in the day on Saturday, October 29. It arrived early Tuesday, November 1. If I had paid extra for it to arrive on the 29th, I would be... displeased. But as it is, it's merely annoying. Never had a product arrive more than a day after the ETA. But this is a problem with FedEx, not Amazon, and it did not affect my rating.
